JUMO Now Also Powered from the Roof

The outlook is stark: between 2010 and 2023, the price of electricity for industry customers in Germany could increase by more than 40 % due to the requirements of the Energiewende ("energy transition"). JUMO GmbH & Co. KG in Fulda, Germany is therefore focusing on increasing its own energy production and has now put its first photovoltaic system into operation.

As far as Bernhard Juchheim, CEO of JUMO, is concerned, the issue of energy efficiency has been at the top of the agenda for a long time. He said, "For every new construction and renovation measure in our company, we check for potential savings and put concrete measures in place where possible." For this reason, six block-type thermal power stations were put into operation a few years ago. These supply power for the needs of the site.

In addition, the 90,000 to 105,000 kWh of power that the 416 collectors in the photovoltaic system will produce annually will not be fed into the mains. This will primarily be used for process cooling, confirmed Energy Manager Holger Leydecker. "The installation of the system has proved to be an excellent idea for several reasons. On the one hand, the entire building on the Moritz-Juchheim-Str. was renovated. And on the other, we now have a sustainable, unshaded roof area of more than 600 m2."

The amount of power produced would sustain almost 25 single family homes and will save, depending on the sunshine duration, between 15,000 and 23,000 euro in energy costs every year. At the same time as the system was installed, all the windows in the building were replaced with modern energy-saving ones. The total volume of investment for the renovation amounts to around 600,000 euro according to Facility Manager Matthias Müller.
